12/9/2023 0 Comments Big kentucky waterfall![]() The Great Meadows Campground, located on Stearns District of the Daniel Boone National Forest, is developed on both sides of the road. Overall a beautiful place and a great hike.Area Status: Open. There are picnic areas conveniently located near the beginning of the trail. Better to take the longer trail or backtrack the way you came in. ![]() The little pool really is too good to pass up! On our way out we decided to take the staircase. If you go, I suggest water shoes and possibly a change of clothes for children. The kids enjoyed playing and exploring there. It didn't look impressive until we got down below the Falls, then it was amazing! There is a small pool of water at the bottom of the Falls with a pebbly bottom perfect for wading and splashing. It was a very small mountain stream coming over the Falls. Gorgeous rock cliffs! I was a little disappointed with the Falls itself as I had imagined more of a river Falls with lots of water coming over. The trail was well maintained and clearly marked. We choose the arch trail because it was about the distance we thought the children could hike (1.5 miles) and it was less steep than the shorter trail. There were public bathrooms located at the beginning of the trail which were fairly clean and sufficiently equipped. I visited with my daughter and three grandchildren ages 5 and 6. An iconic burger and shake place in business since 1933. Don't forget to stop at the Dairy Bar in Whitely City while visiting. I strongly suggest this to anyone visiting in the area. Pick your direction based on whether you prefer walking up or down stairs. steps up a challenge for less active folks. We did upper loop first with a return via steps. Just please be responsible with your young ones. ![]() Park service really couldn't block off them off economically and to be honest. There are several places to fall over to a very high drop off. Cell coverage down there is not great so looking up trail maps probably wont work.Īlso, if hiking with little ones be warned. The trail is not marked well and there are some spurs not marked at all. ![]() I suggest taking a cell phone picture of the trailmap. We were pleasantly surprised and happy to see that road has been paved. Last time I was here was maybe three years ago and the 1 1/2 mile road to trail head from rt700 was gravel and a challenge coming back up. But don't expect huge powerful flows, especially mid summer. Still enough water to be pretty impressive. Yahoo Falls as with any hiking trail has no lights on the trail, no guard rails, no barer fences, and is an open trail in which you are free to roam, being that the trail is in a forest there is always a chance of snake bites, bee stings, spider bites, etc, I would highly recomend to always be on guard and watch your step carefully. I also advise having a First Aid Kit handy incase of accidents and/or spider bites, snake bites, bee stings, etc. I personally would NOT recomend Yahoo Falls as a destination for children, elderly, handycap, or any person unable to hike long distances and manuver different walking grounds. We waded the small creek/river that flows to the fall and then hiked on out through a beautiful forest surrounding. The trail then leads up a slanted hill to an over look of the river below and leads to the river which actually flows to the fall, you can walk all the way up to the edge where the water actually falls off of the cliff we have several pictures leaning over the edge while bracing our selves on a tree. The trail is a round trip hike which is a little over one mile and it's all pretty easy walking except the stairs that you hike on - I would recomend that when first entering the trail bare to the left and hike down the stairs insted of up them ( Theres quite a few of them ) Once you reach the bottom of the stairs you walk about a quarter of a mile and you can hear the falls - Theres a large cave that leads in behind the falls and around to the other side, you can play in the falls if you like, the water isnt deep and is perfect for wadeing, Although the rocks in the cave are rather slippery at times, are very sharp and hard to walk on. After arriving at Yahoo Falls, we were sort of shocked because after you reach the destination where you park before actually starting the hiking trip theres a small building which has two bathrooms one for men and one for women and thats it, theres a small light shining on them. My husband and I recently visited Yahoo Falls and have been back several times since, We saw a brocure located in the lobby of Cumberland Falls State Resort, and thought that it would be a really nice place to hike.
